The 2008 CES Green Electronics Tour Well its not my tour bus but I do I find it befitting that my search for green electronics at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show was kicked off at this press event of the John Lennon Educational Bus Tour. As my mind wandered off listening to the music of John Lennon playing in the background I couldn’t help but think that if he was still with us today he’d likely be a significant voice behind today's green movement. Being one who pushed the envelope of his musical genius by embracing new technologies I think John Lennon's tour bus might possibly be running on biofuels along with solar panels powering all the green electronics inside. Here are a few of the Green Electronics innovations I uncovered at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show with more to come |
Philips NEW Eco FlatTV™ Taking home “Best in Show” honors from CNET’s “Best of CES” awards, the Philips Eco TV (42PFL5603D) is one in a series of affordable high-definition green LCD HDTV’s that deliver superb picture quality while minimizing power consumption.

Fujitsu's NEW corn based Laptop Not exactly edible but it sure whet my appetite to own one. Currently sold in Japan but coming to the U.S. next year, the FMV-BIBLO NX95X/D is a 15.4-inch laptop that’s housed in a biodegradable corn based plastic known as polymer. Polymer is a hard shell material made from a blended process of organic materials mixed with petroleum based resins. The end result looks, feels and operates no differently than a conventional laptop and provides the added benefit of reduced waste. less petroeum dependency and easier recycling. This was one of the best examples at the show of what green electronics innovation is all about. See all green Fujitsu Notebooks

Fujitsu's Fabric Notebook? It's not quite ready for prime time but this design idea has some interesting possibilities for the future. This example is a two-fold lightweight fabric notebook that uses Fujitsu's e-paper technology, a lightweight flexible, paper-thin display substrate. It even has a fabric keyboard. The idea being that application specific technology could find its way into our clothing, bags and personal accessories.
Who knows, maybe we'll see purses, wallets, bags and jackets with built-in computer displays that are application specific and 100% recyclable or biodegradable. |
Sanyo's eneloop rechargeable batteries In my opinion these are must-have batteries in any household. I can't say enough about the exceptional performance of this green battery technology. And judging by the size and scope of their booth many others must think so too.
What makes eneloop batteries so exceptional is the fact that they can be recharged over 1000 times and hold up to 85% of their charge for a full year. There's no memory effect and when using with a digital camera they take up to four times as many pictures versus an alkaline battery. They're also 100% recyclable. I estimate they save me close to $200.00 a year in battery expenses. Alkaline batteries are now banned in my household. See eneloop batteries |
ECO Speakers and ECO iPod Cases ECO Speakers, from Fashionation, are an affordable, portable set of speakers that are made from heavy grade recycled paper. Provided flat in a recycled package you simply assemble the paper speaker enclosure into a portable 2-channel speaker system for your iPod or MP3 Player.
As for sound quality I thought they were decent enough for use in a small listening area. I doubt the actual speakers themselves are recyclable but everything else certainly is. The ECO Speakers are ideally suited for the outdoor adventurer and business traveler who doesn't want to mess with bulk and weight. Retail pricing has not been set but is expected to be under $20.00 and will be available in April
As for the ECO iPod Cases, these were shown as a stylish set of prototypes based on designs made from hemp and other organic materials. Availability was not announced. |
Toshiba Notebooks Toshiba showcased a comprehensive and very impressive informational area that openly disclosed their progress as a company towards reducing their environmental footprint over the past 8 years and what their goals are over the next 2-40 years.
Using a a systematic and sophisticated process called "Factor", Toshiba creates an overall assessment of what a products value is worth in the maketplace from both a user standpoint as well as an environmental one. A numerical value or "Factor" is applied to the product to determine whether or not the product should come to market.
There were many green Toshiba products with a high "Factor" rating including laptops, audio and LCD TV's. Most notable was the Portege R500 with a Factor of 5.11. It is considered to be the greenest laptop on the market. The Portege R500 is also EPEAT registered with a Gold designation, meaning it meets all the required environmental criteria for the category plus 75% of the optional criteria.
